Catalogue Essay

In Shinobi, Mac Tabilis channels the essence of stealth, intimacy, and unspoken strength into a singular visual statement. The work captures two intertwined figures—rendered in a liquid spectrum of iridescent tones—locked in an embrace that is as much a concealment as it is a revelation. The title evokes the shadow-world of the shinobi, the fabled Japanese agents of subtlety and precision, yet here their legacy is transmuted into a deeply human and emotional register.

The background, a fractured architectural space intersected by explosive radial lines, heightens the duality of stillness and motion. It suggests the momentary breach of a private world by unseen forces—an intrusion that the figures meet not with resistance, but with unyielding unity. The specter-like forms and soft dissolves in the periphery allude to memory, transience, and the art of moving through life without leaving obvious traces.

Tabilis’ technique is a masterclass in hybrid composition. Traditional principles of chiaroscuro and form are merged seamlessly with digital layering, producing a surface that shifts with the light—sometimes revealing luminous detail, other times cloaking it in shadow. This interplay reinforces the work’s central theme: the beauty of what remains hidden.

With Shinobi, Tabilis joins a lineage of contemporary artists who blur the boundaries between the physical and the virtual, between intimacy and enigma. It is a work that invites repeated viewing, each encounter revealing something previously unseen—much like the elusive figures from which it draws its name.
